What is the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)?

The Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) is a technique designed to help bring emotional freedom for those that suffer with negative emotions and health issues. Essentially, it is the use of psychological acupressure to break emotional barriers to happiness and peace.  It not only reduces negative emotions, but it has also been effective reducing pain, food cravings, and helps motivate people to achieve their goals.

If you’re familiar with acupuncture, then you will understand EFT well, as it is based upon the same energy meridians on the body.  Acupuncture has been used for thousands of years to heal emotional and physical problems.  With EFT, instead of using needles, you use your fingers to tap the meridians at certain points and at the same time you think about whatever issue you are facing and speak positive affirmations.

The science behind this is that negative emotions are tied to the body’s bioenergy system, so if you use EFT you are essentially short-circuiting the connection between the negative feeling and the brain. The body has an electromagnetic energy that flows through it, so the use of EFT uses energy principles to bring people to optimal emotional and physical health.

This alternative method of healing has been found to have a high success rate with medical practitioners. In fact, many therapists use EFT in their counseling sessions to help clients face their anxieties, fears, health issues, and other negative emotions.

The Tapping Points

Learning where to tap only takes a few minutes.  You simply use your fingertips on one hand (your first and second finger should suffice) and gently tap the meridian points.  The easiest way to learn EFT tapping points is to watch someone else tap and speak the affirmations, which you can do at the EFT website.

Here are the tapping points:

  1. Top of the head
  2. Just above the eyebrows
  3. The side of the eye on the bone near the temple.
  4. Just underneath the eye
  5. Just underneath the nose
  6. Just underneath the chin
  7. The point where the collarbone and the first rib meet.
  8. Underneath the arm pit even point with the nipple
  9. The inside of both wrists

Tapping with one hand is the most common route and you can use either hand.  You can even switch hands during a tapping process.

The tapping process

When you begin tapping, you will be thinking about your problem, whether it is emotional of physical. You will begin by tapping on the outside of your hand while stating the issue. It might start something like this,

“Even though I am feeling very anxious right now, I completely love and accept myself.”

You will do this three times before beginning the tapping sequence.  At each tapping point, you will tap between 5 and 7 times while stating an affirmation. As said before, it is easiest to learn this method by watching the videos and repeating what you see and hear. 

Once you’ve gone through the tapping series once, you will go through it again once or twice more.  The goal is to get your brain to associate the negative feeling or condition with the brain and reverse the normal reaction of the brain.  Essentially you short-wire the brain’s normal circuitry so that it does not continue to do what it is used to doing and you rewire the brain to do what you want it to do.

Once you have used EFT for several weeks, you should get the general feel for how the affirmations are supposed to go for any issue or problem you have and be able to tap easily by yourself. You can tap anywhere- at the store, at work, in your car- it only takes a few minutes to get through a tapping sequence.
